LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Lab Exercise

LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Lab Exercise: 1. Blog about your tutoring observations/experiences. Same as last week. 2. Give HIGHER ORDER CONCERN feedback to the following students ba...

This tutoring session was very similar to the last one. As i walked in i was paired with a tutor with two other students one who was writing a paper on the influence of music and the other needed help with her Cat5 subject essay. I was expecting the tutor to introduce me to the students so they would not be thinking who is this random guy staring at me taking notes, but it went exactly the opposite way. The tutor quickly proceeded to get straight to the work disregarding the fact that i was even in the session. I can understand where she's coming from if i was being judged id want to cast out the person from even looking at me. So the first student addressed her issues with grammatical errors, but the tutor wanted her to focus on her thesis statement and other factors. The tutoring session shifted and she was helping the girl go over her vocabulary and working on simple mechanical things which completely threw me of course. So eventually the split time technique was established and she began to move to the next student which believe me she was nervous she was shaking in her Uggs. The tutor gave a brief speech telling her to relax and read the prompt she was given which started her separate session. The students paper was formulated with very detailed ideas, resources and other beautiful things that compiled onto the essay, but her organization was floppy. So the teacher began skimming through the paper and eventually had her think of the essay as a head, body and legs which ultimately helped the girl with her organizational skills. The tutoring session was based of Collaborative Learning as both students worked together with the teacher to bring more ideas and communicate on things they were unsure about.

This is a great start to the diagnostic essay. As i started reading i noticed a strong use of vocabulary used in a correct manner to analyze the type of person Malcolm X is known for. It was particularly interesting as your topic dived deep into the oppressive situations that blacks had to undergo. You express a deep understanding of how he spoke out against discrimination and to how Malcolm X tipped the revolutionary scale. What i would suggest improving is the structure of your piece.  You express such strong ideas, but you fail to back it up with details such as this sentence  "Malcolm X, being the amazing speaker and thinker that he was, presented many innovative ideas to the black community in his time ". You need to go back into this sentence and break down the ideas into a sequence. Not to mention you need to include a quotation that supports your idea.  Other than that its a great start and your opinion is very well rounded i hope you keep it up and don't be discouraged.

LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Observation One Assignment

LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Observation One Assignment: For the next 15-20 minutes, please reflect on your observation in the Writing Center. Write a professional blog (first-person is fine!) that...

The experience went exactly how i expected it to go. The tutor introduced herself to the students one by one and i sat in a chair and observed what was about to begin. The tutor first started by focusing her attention on one student then switching to the other student. As the first student was starting she asked some simple questions What was the purpose of your essay? What do you think you need to improve on? and Do you have your prompt on you? So as the butterflies dispersed from my stomach i began to take notes on the conversation between the tutor and student. She established the basic rules and procedures that the student needed to know for example she cannot proofread but improvise on the weak points of the essay. I observed the way the tutor was by position, she was seated in an upright position as expected and used hand gestures to make it more professional. My thoughts on this experience brought up many ideas in my head as to how my first experience would go teaching a student and helping them on their assignment. I was particularly interested how she balanced time for both students, while addressing the most important issues like improvisation on the thesis and how to structure the essay in an organized manner. The tutor used many of the ideas we studied in class, but the ones that really JUMPED out at me were collaborative teaching and teacher centered tutoring. They performed collaboratively when the tutor had finished skimming the rough draft and began asking questions to what it was that the prompt specifically asked, because the student had forgotten it at home. So they began discussing the topic which was " My Role Model " and then they eventually established a sequence of events that should reflect the assignment. The teacher avoided what we talked about in the reading known as false praise and gave small compliments that really struck her as unique and authentic. Besides the context of our class work i found many things effective and ineffective. The ineffective thing that really seemed to deteriorate the act of tutor was the constant attention to grammatical and subject very agreement. It kind of discouraged the student by making them think that they were not going to be able to finish the paper by the deadline, but then the teacher encouraged her. I thought that the process of motivating a student was very beneficial as it helped them to bring force a sense of confidence in the student. Overall it was a very new experience and i look forward to seeing how other teachers use methods to help other students.

LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Blog: Tutoring Observation Expectations

LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Blog: Tutoring Observation Expectations: What are your expectations for your observations? What are your feelings? What are you going to look for? What do you expect to happen? What...

My expectations for observing tutoring in the writing center would come in different forms such as posture, hand gestures and responding to the students approach for help. As i sit there quietly and take into consideration every aspect that goes into the tutoring process i am hoping to gain a different perspective of tutoring. My feelings towards this assignment bring up an expression of both nervousness because its something completely new to me and i am particularly excited because it could change my philosophy on helping other students. I expect to undertake numerous amounts of preparation in studying the way the tutor approaches a certain issue.
