LaGuardia Tutoring Writing 2012: Lab Exercise: 1. Blog about your tutoring observations/experiences. Same as last week. 2. Give HIGHER ORDER CONCERN feedback to the following students ba...
This tutoring session was very similar to the last one. As i walked in i was paired with a tutor with two other students one who was writing a paper on the influence of music and the other needed help with her Cat5 subject essay. I was expecting the tutor to introduce me to the students so they would not be thinking who is this random guy staring at me taking notes, but it went exactly the opposite way. The tutor quickly proceeded to get straight to the work disregarding the fact that i was even in the session. I can understand where she's coming from if i was being judged id want to cast out the person from even looking at me. So the first student addressed her issues with grammatical errors, but the tutor wanted her to focus on her thesis statement and other factors. The tutoring session shifted and she was helping the girl go over her vocabulary and working on simple mechanical things which completely threw me of course. So eventually the split time technique was established and she began to move to the next student which believe me she was nervous she was shaking in her Uggs. The tutor gave a brief speech telling her to relax and read the prompt she was given which started her separate session. The students paper was formulated with very detailed ideas, resources and other beautiful things that compiled onto the essay, but her organization was floppy. So the teacher began skimming through the paper and eventually had her think of the essay as a head, body and legs which ultimately helped the girl with her organizational skills. The tutoring session was based of Collaborative Learning as both students worked together with the teacher to bring more ideas and communicate on things they were unsure about.
